THE BUSSACO WOODS
Bussaco has been famous for its magnificent woods for the last three hundred years...
In 1789, Gabriel Grisley , the first german botanist who herborised in Portugal , styles Bussaco alter Libanus , a second Lebanon.
And prince Lichnowsky, writing in 1842, remarks: The park of the enclosure of Bussaco cannot be compared with any other in Europe.
Bussaco owes the preservation of its woods , in the first place, to the bishops and the chapter of Coimbra, but it is the Carmelites who improved them very greatly. One of the rules of their order in Portugal ran thus: In order that the Desert be always agreeable and fit for prayer , the Prior should plant every year new forest trees.
The Palace Hotel , a quite unique and sumptuous edifice, was designed by Luigi Manini in what is known as the Manueline or the portuguese renaissance style, or in the same style as the convent and the tower of Belem, in Lisbon
